Champagne for New Year's Eve

Now that the new year is nearly here, you may be trying to incorporate some changes into your life so you can be your best self going forward. Whether you are opting to spend some extra time at the gym, performing an act of kindness every day, or making healthier choices in your diet, you’re making the decision to change for the better. If you don’t already have a New Year’s resolution or you have room for a couple more, you’re in luck. Here are some ways that you can work towards a healthier smile in 2022.

Get on Track with Dental Checkups

Regular cleanings and checkups are essential for optimal oral health, but about a third of Americans don’t see their dentist as often as they would like to. There is no better time than now to give your dentist a call to schedule your next visit. Don’t forget to schedule another one before leaving the practice.

Floss More Often

Brushing is a great way to remove plaque and good debris from your smile, but there are some areas where the bristles can’t quite reach. That’s why flossing is necessary. This step is needed so you can remove bacterial-filled plaque from between the teeth and beneath the gumline. If you haven’t gotten into this habit, now is a great time to start. Place your container of floss next to your toothpaste so you see it every time you brush.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease and is linked to many other health conditions, like oral cancer. This habit can be very difficult for some people to give up, so finding a healthier replacement activity for when the cravings kick in can help. Talk to your friends, family, and doctor about the best ways you can give them up permanently.

Go Easy on Sugar

Everyone likes to enjoy something sweet now and again, but too much can put your smile at risk for tooth decay. Reduce the number of sugary sweets that you buy and try to find something else that satisfies the craving. For example, choose sparkling water instead of cola or have some sugar-free gum in the place of candy.

Pick Out Smile-Friendly Foods

The good news is that not all foods are harmful for your teeth. Some of them can actually be very beneficial. Try adding some tooth-healthy foods into your diet, like dairy products. They are beneficial for your teeth because they are high in calcium. Have some milk or yogurt for breakfast. Cheese, apples, pears, carrots, celery, and almonds are also excellent options.

2022 can be the year that you achieve optimal oral health. By trying out one or more of the resolutions listed above, you will be a step closer!
