3 Reasons At-Home Orthodontics Aren’t the Right Choice

April 9, 2018

Man placing clear aligner trayThese days, almost anything you can imagine is available at the touch of a button or click of the mouse. If you’ve seen the commercials advertising orthodontics like Invisalign alignment trays by mail, you may be saying to yourself, “That sounds easy.” While these services offer effective treatment for some patients, the risks of failure and complications may just outweigh the rewards. In this post, we’ll walk you through three of the main reasons we recommend consulting with a skilled orthodontist or dentist before beginning any orthodontic treatment plans.

1 – You Don’t Get All of the Information

Raise your hand if you’re the kind of person who actually takes the time to read all of the directions before you get started with a project. Well if you did raise your hand, go ahead and use it to pat yourself on the back because you are one of a very few people who do. If you choose to move forward with at-home orthodontic treatment and you don’t read all of the directions carefully before you begin, the result can be ineffective treatment at best and serious oral health issues at worst.

2 – You May Not Have Access to Help During Emergencies

If something goes wrong during your orthodontic treatment, you want to have a skilled dentist on your side to help you right away. When you work with a dentist or orthodontist, you have professional help available in case of an emergency. Your general dentist will obviously do his or her best to help you, but they won’t be familiar with your treatment plan, which puts you at greater risk for complications.

3 – You May End Up Needing More Care

The number one reason we recommend patients work with a professional while straightening their teeth is that patients who use these mail order orthodontic aligners often end up needing additional treatment down the line. Without guidance from a skilled professional, patients don’t always fully understand the consequences of behaviors like leaving their aligners out for hours at a time or changing aligners too soon. Patients may end up experiencing severe dental concerns like tooth loss without assistance from their dentists.
