Dentures can restore your confidence, improve your ability to eat and speak, and help you enjoy a complete smile again. But like natural teeth, they require daily care to keep them clean, comfortable, and in great shape. Whether you’re new to dentures or have been wearing them for years, establishing a solid care routine can extend their lifespan and protect your oral health. Here are 4 essential tips for taking care of your dentures.
1. Clean Your Dentures Daily
Just like natural teeth, dentures collect plaque, bacteria, and food debris throughout the day. Cleaning them daily is crucial to keeping your mouth healthy and preventing odors or stains. Use a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner—regular toothpaste is too harsh and can scratch the surface. Gently brush all areas of your dentures, especially the grooves that sit against your gums.
After brushing, rinse thoroughly with warm—not hot—water. High temperatures can warp the denture material and affect the fit.
2. Handle Them with Care
Dentures may be durable, but they’re not unbreakable. Dropping them, even from a short distance, can cause cracks or fractures. When cleaning or removing them, it’s a good idea to place a towel in the sink or fill the basin with water to cushion them if they slip.
Always use both hands to remove or insert your dentures, and avoid forcing them into place—if they don’t fit comfortably, your dentist may need to adjust them.
3. Soak Them Overnight
Keeping your dentures moist is essential for maintaining their shape. Most dentures need to be soaked in a denture solution or plain water overnight while you sleep. This gives your gums time to rest and prevents the acrylic from drying out or warping.
Make sure to follow your dentist’s instructions or the product guidelines for the soaking solution. Some cleaners are designed for overnight use, while others only require a few minutes.
4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene and Regular Checkups
Even with dentures, your oral health still matters. Be sure to clean your gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth daily using a soft toothbrush or a damp cloth. This helps prevent gum disease and irritation.
Regular dental visits are also important. Your dentist will check the fit of your dentures, look for signs of wear, and ensure your mouth stays healthy.
Caring for your dentures doesn’t have to be complicated—just a few simple habits can keep your smile looking and feeling its best.
