This occurs because the teeth are slowly shifting, so soreness is bound to happen at one point or another in the mouth. It’s normal for this to happen for the first few days after putting in new aligners. Fortunately, there are things you can do in order to relieve Invisalign discomfort. Read on to learn a few helpful tips.

Cold Compress

One great way that you can sooth swollen and sore tissue in your mouth is by using a cold compress. This method numbs the area in order to lessen pain while simultaneously reducing inflammation. This technique is effective against the soreness that you feel after a new set of Invisalign aligners.

Pain Medication

If your soreness isn’t easily bearable, you can choose an over-the-counter pain reliever to help. Just take the same medication that you normally would take for a headache and follow the instructions on the bottle. But sure to only take as directed and ask your doctor before taking medications that you haven’t used in the past. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are popular, effective options.

Saltwater

For people who are looking for a more natural remedy, saltwater may be the trick. Add about a half teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Sip on it and rinse your sore gums before spitting it out. Do this until all of the water is gone. This method is effective because it helps to reduce inflammation and sooth irritated tissues in the mouth.

Stay Away from Hard Foods

If you have a sore mouth, munching down on hard, sticky foods probably isn’t the best idea. It can make your mouth feel even more uncomfortable. For the first few meals that you have after putting in a new set of trays, choose softer foods to enjoy.

Switch Your Aligners Before You Sleep

Most people feel the majority of their discomfort throughout the first few hours after putting in their aligners. When you put them in before going to bed, you will be sleeping during the most sensitive hours while your teeth are moving the most dramatically.

See Your Dentist

You should see your dentist on a regular basis throughout your Invisalign treatment. This way, they can keep an eye on your progress and make sure that no issues arise. If you have been dealing with a lot of discomfort, you should let them know. They may be able to make adjustments to make your treatment more tolerable.

Orthodontic treatment isn’t generally comfortable, but when you take the steps listed above, you can work towards a straighter smile with minimal soreness. This way, you can reach the goals that you have for your teeth with ease!

About the Author

Dr. Wael M.
